The Madman ( (きょう) (じん) , Kyōjin) is a character in Jun Mochizuki's Crimson-Shell. He's described as a genius scientist, and is the person responsible for the creation of the Roses before his sudden disappearance five years ago.

Along with the Roses, the Madman also created the Crimson-Shell — a weapon made with the Crimson Rose's blood that is poisonous to the Black Roses — and the Death Scythe — a medicine that paralyzes and suppresses the Roses.

Personality[]

Not much is known about his personality, but it is known that The Madman was a very intelligent and ambitious man. He also doesn't seem to care about ethics or morality, being willing to abduct humans — adults and children alike — to use as subjects for his experiments.

History[]

Leading a team of researchers, a the Madman created a special flower, known as the Premier Rose, and implanted its seeds into abducted humans in an attempt to create mutated beings with superhuman abilities.[1]

The Madman succeeded in creating strong mutants labeled as monsters — the Black Roses — and continued his experiments to further enhance them and use them as weapons.[2] However, these Roses had a fatal flaw — all of them needed to feed on someone's life force in order to survive, and would eventually succumb to a deadly disease known as Black Spot.[3]

Further into the research, a different mutation happened, creating the Crimson Rose. Unlike the Black Roses, the Crimson Rose didn't get infected with Black Spot, and could live without devouring other humans. Still, the Madman dubbed her as a "defective failure". The other researchers then theorized that the Madman tried to keep the powers of the Crimson Rose for himself, claiming that he called her a failure so that he could deceive them, leaving them with the defective Black Roses.[4]

Soon after, the Madman disappeared leaving no trace behind, abandoning his colleagues and research.

Powers & Abilities[]

The Madman appears in the series as an incredible inventor who is capable of creating scientific mutations and medicines with his intelligence.

  • Creating Mutations - As a scientist, he created many Rose mutations by combining humans with the Seed of the Premier Rose. These human-rose hybrids are known as Roses.
  • Creating Weapons - He also created the Crimson-Shell and the Death Scythe, both being weapons designed to combat Roses.

Relationships[]

The Crimson Rose[]

Although he labeled her as a "defective failure", the Madman was obsessed with the Crimson Rose after her creation, spending all of his time furthering his research on her abilities.

Black Roses[]

While the Madman treated the Black Roses as mere experimental subjects, they saw him Madman as a father figure, and even as a god — they couldn't disobey him, and didn't even feel like doing so.[2] This led to a feeling of great betrayal to the Black Roses when he left, causing their rebellion that resulted in the attempt of stealing Claudia's Seed, in hopes that mayve the Madman would come back to them when they were finally perfect.
